A conversation heard in passing today...

Woman in obnoxious orange sweater: Oh... I'm so sorry.
Woman with long braid: He was very, very old.
Woman in obnoxious orange sweater: I know, losing a pet. That's like losing your child.
Woman with long braid: *without skipping a beat* Oh, no... I think it's worse to lose your pet.
Woman in obnoxious orange sweater: *nods* Yeah, *snickers* they're better than kids.
Woman with long braid: *laughs* So true..

I walk away disgusted.
I probably would have slapped both so hard they would still be seeing stars! What self-control you have!!

They obviously never suffered the loss of a child. I have lost many dogs in my life and yes I did grieve but in no way should people ever, ever make a statement like that. Even if you have never had a child you should be smart enough to know this. Heartless bitches. I am so sorry you had to hear that.

Oh my goodnes! I am so sorry you had to hear these obviously ignorant women have this conversation! How could they even imply that the life of an animal somehow compares to the lives of our precious CHILDREN??? This infuriates me! People just do not get it! Oh, how awful. I'm sorry you had to overhear that. I don't think I'd have been charitable enough to just walk away - I love my dog, we loved our last dog, but seriously I'd have lost my mind letting them know that losing my baby was way worse. (((Hugs)))

The ignorance of some people is astounding. How hurtful to have heard such comments. I would have not been able to keep my mouth shut. I have lost both of my dogs in the last five years and my child. While losing my dogs definitely hurt, there is no pain comparable to that of losing your child. I'm thinking Peyton probably put her arms around you and gave you a loving angel hug at that very moment, and I must say that I truly admire your grace in that moment. Sending you hugs

When my mother had her initial cancer surgery, the surgeon came to us to tell us that it was malignant and it was *bad* half way through the operation. As we tried to gather ourselves together, recover from the news and collect ourselves, we overheard another conversation in the waiting area: two women joking about cancer (getting it, dying from it, possibly ovarian, which is what my mother had, I don't remember the specifics).
It was surreal. We sat there, my brother and father and I, looking at each other: speechless. Later, I would have liked to re-do that moment by saying through tears, "my mother was just given a death sentence of ovarian cancer. Can you make your jokes somewhere else?"
People are stupid. Careless. They don't think, and clearly they have no clue what it means to lose a child. I have lost both, my children and beloved, elderly family pets. Of course, it hurts. Of course, it is an entirely different thing.
I'm sorry you had to hear that. I'm sorry people say things like that. It makes me wonder about humanity.
Please know there are others who understand.
Lucky them to have no idea what they are talking about. How nice for them to think they know that its harder to lose a pet than a child. How interesting that they have come to the conclusion with no real knowledge of what they are talking about. Forming an opinion and speaking it as truth is always so charming. How pleasant to know there are such ginormous, big mouthed, morons living in this world. Now, please excuse me while I go and throw up a little.
Wow! That just leaves me speechless. I'm not sure how anyone could think those comments are justified. I often wonder if people speak before thinking. And really, how many people talk without taking in to consideration people around them. I would never think to say something as cold as that...even before my losses. A pet compared to a human? Seriously. I know some people adore their pets, and some people even call their pets "furbabies" but a pet dying is in NO way even close to being like loosing a child.

There is NO comparison and obviously these women have never lost a child. It is not a joke and it is nothing to laugh about. I'm sorry you had to hear such a disgusting conversation.
We actually lost a pet today, or my 8 year old daugther did. But as sad as I am for her, even she knows better than the level of stupidity that these ladies showed. I guess it is a reminder that in the end, thinking before you speak is a good thing to do. You never know the story of the person standing beside you in the checkout or wherevere. I honestly would have probably looked at them both and said, 'have you ever lost a child? I have and it is NOT the same you're right about that.' And walked away leaving them there with their mouthes, undoubtedly hanging open. But that is where I am these days, angry. I guess it is another stage that comes and goes.

It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people are who have not suffered the loss of a child.
Ugggggggh... Just... Wow... I continue to wonder why WE lost our babies that we wanted so much, when all those morons out there who think it wouldn't cause their world to come crashing down have never lost a child. What they said is horrible and inexcusable. I've lost pets who I loved very much, and grandparents, and aunts... But losing my daughter was and continues to be the most difficult loss I could ever experience.

WOW. I wish I was there. Then I could tell them, "Iv'e lost 3 cats and 1 dog, and although they were relly old, like part of the family, and I loved them dearly, it doesn't even come close to burrying my 2 beautiful baby girls." Of course I would've loved to add, "you dumb bitches" but I would censor that. Sorry, I just can't believe how people are just so laissez faire, crude, or just plain insensitive. I am proud of you for just walking away, definately the classier thing to do. Im sorry you had to experience that.
